Asking $22 Million: A Cape Cod-Inspired Home On The Beach In Malibu

A Cape Cod-inspired house on the beach in Malibu, Calif., is asking $22 million.

Located in the exclusive enclave of Broad Beach, the home is owned by apparel-manufacturing executive Andrew Leigh and his wife, Barbara Leigh.

They paid $4.9 million for the home in 2002, according to public records, and renovated the house.

Built in 1959, the property is next to the former home of actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. The Leighs’ estate sits on about a third of an acre, with a roughly 3,800-square-foot main residence and a one-bedroom guesthouse. A courtyard containing a fire pit and hot tub leads to a sandy beach, which is unusual for Malibu, according to listing agent Rochelle Maize of Nourmand & Associates.

“With a lot of beachfront homes in Malibu, there’s a tiny strip of sand and then rocks,” Maize said.

When the Leighs bought the house, they were living primarily in the San Fernando Valley with their two children. The Malibu home served as a weekend getaway and was ideal for hosting parties—including a surprise 50th birthday for Barbara—and spending quiet evenings on the beach. Unlike other beaches close to the noise of the Pacific Coast Highway, Broad Beach was quiet, they said.

As the couple renovated the property, they leaned into its Cape Cod style. Barbara is originally from the East Coast, and they took inspiration from the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard. These architectural features include the home’s crown molding and the blue hydrangeas blooming outside.

They also added disappearing doors for a full view of the ocean. In designing the open chef’s kitchen and choosing new appliances— “I love ice makers,” Barbara said—the family created a space to share their love for cooking.

“That’s one of the things that brings us together,” Andrew said.

With the couple spending more time at their home in New York, and their two daughters now adults, Andrew said they decided it was time to sell.

“I know it’s a trophy property, and people like to have trophies, but it really is a house for a family to enjoy,” Andrew said. “So my wish is for someone to enjoy it the same way our family did for so many years.”

Andrew is the president of Jerry Leigh of California, his father’s namesake company, which was founded in 1962. The clothing maker has license agreements with brands including Walt Disney, Marvel and Sanrio. Barbara is a homemaker and philanthropist.

In the wake of the disastrous Palisades wildfires, Maize said, Malibu’s luxury market has seen more demand, especially for move-in-ready estates.

The median Malibu sale price was $1.675 million in June, down 58.6% from June of last year, according to Redfin.
